The ordinance is the trip. On this stretch of the Carolina coast every incorporated beach town writes its own rule about dogs on the sand, and no two of them agree. One town allows dogs on the beach at any hour from November through February and bans them between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. from May 15. The next town over runs its restricted season a full month longer and starts the daytime ban at 8 a.m. A third has no closed hours at all, only a leash length written in feet. They are posted at the accesses, they are enforced by beach patrol on foot and by truck, and they change by council vote without anybody sending a letter about it.
That is why a dog friendly coastal Carolina vacation package here is sold with paper attached. Before you leave, you get a single sheet with the hours for your own town and the four towns within a forty minute drive, dated to the week you are actually traveling, with the leash length for each and the accesses where the walk from the car to the water is under two hundred yards. People who get this trip wrong get it wrong at 11 a.m. on the second day, standing at a walkover with a dog and a sign.
The base is a self catering house, two or three bedrooms, within a quarter mile of a public access, with a fenced yard and an outdoor shower on the ground level. You drive your own car the whole week. Nothing about the lodging is shared, which is the reason the figure sits where it does.

- Your dog is on the sand with you at dawn and again in the evening, in the house all week, and in the car for every drive; the two things it misses are a boat and a fort.

- What the dog is shut out of
- Two named items. A half day inshore fishing charter out of the sound, four hours on the water, takes no dogs aboard: one adult stays at the house with the dog, or you skip it and we drop it from the invoice. The masonry fort on the island takes dogs on the grounds and the seawall but not inside the walls or the casemates, which is about ninety minutes of the visit; people rotate at the gate. Everything else was checked against the current town ordinances and the property rules in writing before this page was priced, including all four beach accesses on the map.

- Your driving, fuel, tolls and any bridge or island parking; all food, whether cooked in the house or eaten out; the fishing charter if you keep it; the ferry fare for foot passengers and the vehicle rate if you take the car across; the fort entrance fee; a second dog beyond the two the house fee covers; damage or extra cleaning billed by the property after you leave; anything your own veterinarian handles, which is yours to arrange and not something this office does.
- Who should not book this
- Anyone who wants July and August and will not get up early, since the ordinance shuts the sand to dogs through the middle of the day and the house has no way around that. Anyone who needs a dog beside them on the water, because the charter refuses and there is no substitute boat. Anyone who wants a walkable resort strip with restaurant patios every hundred yards; this is a driving week between quiet accesses, and the nearest grocery run is eleven miles.
The house, the yard, and what the sand is actually like
These are single family houses on pilings, most of them built between the late 1980s and the mid 2000s, with the living space upstairs and covered parking underneath. The fence is the part worth caring about: four feet of wood or vinyl around a yard of maybe forty by thirty feet, sand and coarse grass rather than lawn, with a gate you can latch. The outdoor shower matters more than it sounds. Sound side mud and beach sand both come home on a dog, and every one of these houses has a hard rule about rinsing before the stairs. Interior rules vary and are on your confirmation: some allow dogs on furniture, most do not, all of them expect the dog off the beds.
The beach itself is wide at low tide, two hundred feet of hard packed sand you can walk four abreast on, and narrow enough at high tide in places that you are up against the dune line. Tide swing runs about four feet, so the difference is not subtle, and the tide table decides your morning more than the weather does. The sand is fine and pale in the north, coarser and shell heavy toward the inlets, and the shell is the thing that bothers paws on a long walk.
Behind the beach there is the sound, which is shallow, warm and calm, and where most dogs actually swim. Two sanctioned off leash stretches exist within the drive radius, both on sound side spoil islands reachable by causeway, both open year round with no hour restriction. They are marked on your map. Everywhere else the leash rule applies and is written in feet.

Which weeks work here and which ones fight you
Two forces set the calendar: heat and storms. Surface sand at midday in July reads well over 120 degrees on a dark colored beach, hot enough that people carry dogs the last stretch to the water, and that is the same window the ordinance closes anyway. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, with the practical peak between mid August and early October, and a named storm on the forecast cone means the county calls a mandatory evacuation for the barrier islands, sometimes 48 hours ahead. Houses here carry their own storm terms and we send them to you before you pay anything.
Spring and late fall are what this office actually recommends, and the price sheet reflects it.
