What a dog friendly vacation costs, and where the money actually goes

What a dog friendly vacation costs on this site runs from $1,180 to $3,120 per person. Two decisions move that figure more than every other decision combined.

Eleven trips, all of them road reachable. Lowest figure on the site is $1,180 per person.

Two things set the number. The first is whether you are renting a whole place or a room off a shared corridor. A whole place is a cabin, a cottage, a standalone unit with its own door to the outside. A room off a corridor means every trip outside starts with a walk past other guests' doors, and it means the property has a policy about that walk. Whole places cost more per night and almost always come in cheaper per person once there are two of you, because you are cooking. On the trips filed as all-of-it, the lodging is a whole place every time, and that is not a coincidence. Nothing on those weeks shuts a dog out precisely because there is no shared corridor and no dining room to be shut out of.

The second lever is the dog supplement, and this is where quoted prices stop matching each other. Properties bill it in three different shapes and the shapes are not comparable at a glance.

Per night is the most common. Thirty dollars a night sounds small and turns into two hundred and ten over a week. Per stay is a single flat charge no matter how long you sit there, usually somewhere between seventy five and two hundred, and on a long week it is the lowest priced of the three by a wide margin. Per dog matters only if you are bringing two, and then it doubles whichever of the first two shapes the property uses. A per-night, per-dog property with two dogs on a seven night week is a different animal financially from a flat per-stay charge, and the difference can be four hundred dollars on an otherwise identical week.

We put the shape in writing on every figure we send you. Not the amount alone. The shape, the amount, the number of nights it applies to, and whether the property bills it to us in advance or to you at the door.

What the number on your quote is built from

Lodging for the stated nights
Whole place or room, named as one or the other, never left vague
The dog supplement where the property bills us
Folded into the per person figure so the total is the total
Any property deposit that is genuinely refundable
Shown as its own line with the refund condition written next to it
Access items already booked in your name
Trail permits, parking passes, ferry crossings on the road route where a trip has one
Our work
Zero, because the property pays us a commission after you travel

What is never inside that number

Getting yourself and your dog there
The drive is yours, and so is fuel, tolls and anything overnight on the way
Meals
Groceries on the self catering weeks, restaurants on the rest, all of it outside the figure
Anything from a pharmacy
Yours to buy, and anything to do with your dog's health belongs with your own veterinarian, not with this office
Cover for the trip itself
We do not sell it, quote it or advise on it in any form
The supplement where a property bills at the door
Named as a dollar figure in your quote so you know it is coming, but paid by you on arrival

How the money moves, and why we do not touch yours

This office charges you nothing, at any stage. Not to answer a question, not to build a figure, not to hold a week, not to change one after it is built. There is no consultation fee, no service fee, no booking fee and no card taken on this site at any point. The property pays us a commission after you have traveled, which means we are paid only if the week actually happened and you actually went.

That arrangement has a consequence worth stating plainly, because it cuts both ways. We are not neutral about whether you book. We are neutral about which of the eleven you book, since the commission on a $1,180 week and a $3,120 week arrives from different properties and neither of them is our employer. What we will not do is push you toward a figure you told us was too high. A quote that gets declined pays us the same as no quote at all, so there is nothing in it for us.

anything you send lands here and gets read before that working day ends. A figure with all of the above itemized takes two to four working days, because the dog supplement shape has to be confirmed in writing with the property rather than copied off a page that may be a season old. If a property has changed its shape since we last booked there, you get the new one, not the old one.

Nothing is held until you say so in writing. What can be canceled and by when sits at cancellation terms, in the same plain terms as this page. Questions that come up repeatedly are answered at the short answers.

Say what you are picturing and who is coming

Free either way, and read the same working day. Look down the fields and you will not find one that takes money: this form was never wired to take any.

This opens a conversation. It reserves nothing. No question about the animal's health will ever be put to you here, and none of what you write travels onward to a clinic, an airline or anybody in the business of carrying animals.
