Dog friendly vacation cancellation terms, explained before you agree to them

Dog friendly vacation cancellation terms are set by whoever owns the roof you sleep under. We read them out loud before you commit, and we tell you plainly when a set of terms looks poor.

Our own charge for arranging a trip, and for canceling one: nothing, either way

Nobody at this desk can waive a deadline. That is the whole shape of this page. Travel Pet Adventures arranges stays and does not own, run or staff a single one of them, so when you book a week somewhere, the property has its own terms and those terms are what governs your money. Ours governs nothing, because we never hold your money in the first place. You pay the place direct, on their schedule, and the office is paid a commission by them after your trip has happened.

That arrangement has one honest advantage for you. Since we take nothing from you, there is nothing of ours to refund, and no incentive on our side to talk you out of canceling. When you tell us to cancel, we cancel.

What you should never do is guess at a deadline from memory or from something you read elsewhere. Two self catering cottages on the same lane can sit forty days apart on their refund cutoffs. We put the real one, in full, on the quote sheet that goes to you, and we repeat it on the day you say yes.

  1. While you are still decidingNothing is owed and nothing is held. Ask for the terms in full at this stage, not the summary. We will send the whole clause, including whatever the property says about the dog.
  2. The day you agreeYou pay a deposit to the property under their rules. From that moment their calendar runs. We email you two dates in plain text: the last day for a full refund, and the last day for a partial one.
  3. Thirty to sixty days outThis is where most cutoffs land. Cancel before yours and you usually recover most or all of the deposit. This is also the window where a change of dates is easier to get than a refund, so ask us about moving the week first.
  4. Past the cutoffExpect to recover little or nothing. We still ask, in writing, every time. Sometimes a property will resell the week and return part of it. That is a courtesy, never an entitlement, and we will not pretend otherwise.

Four situations people actually call us about

You cancel and the dog is the reason
Handled exactly like any other cancellation. The property's calendar does not soften because the reason is the dog, and we would be lying to you if we implied it might. Tell us early anyway, because early is the only lever that reliably works.
Something health related comes up with your dog
We are not the people to advise you on that, and we do not. It belongs with your own veterinarian. What we do is the paperwork side: cancel or move the booking the moment you tell us to, and put the request in writing the same working day.
The property changes its dog rules after you book
Real, and more common than sites admit. New management, a new insurer, a bad experience with somebody else's dog. Our position is that the terms you agreed to are the terms, and we say so to them in writing.
The rules did not change but they were never clear
Sometimes what was sold as open to dogs turns out to mean one room and a side door. We push for the arrangement you were quoted. If they will not hold to it, we treat it as their failure, not yours, and we say that in the email.

What we do when a set of terms bites

We push, and we do it on the record. That means a written request to the property naming the clause you agreed to, the date you agreed to it, and what you are asking for. Copies go to you the same working day. If a decision takes them a while, we chase it and tell you when we chased.

We also tell you what we think. If a property handles a cancellation poorly, drags a decision out, or reads its own clause differently in August than it did in April, you will hear that from us in plain words, and we will not put that property in front of you again. A recommendation we cannot stand behind is worth nothing to either of us.

There are two things we cannot do. We cannot overrule a property, because we are not its owner or its agent, and no amount of pushing changes who signs the refund. And we cannot pay you out of our own funds. This office holds no client money, runs no escrow, and does not stand behind anybody else's refund with its own bank account. Any figure that comes back to you comes from the property.

If you want a second opinion on a clause before you agree to it, ask. Reading terms out loud is free, and it is easier than arguing about them in month four. See the short answers for the questions that come up most, and what belongs with your veterinarian for the line we draw around anything medical.

Tell us to cancel, or ask us to read a clause

Say what you are picturing and who is coming

Free either way, and read the same working day. Look down the fields and you will not find one that takes money: this form was never wired to take any.

This opens a conversation. It reserves nothing. No question about the animal's health will ever be put to you here, and none of what you write travels onward to a clinic, an airline or anybody in the business of carrying animals.
